MEET SUMMARY
On Saturday, the UW-Stout Cross Country team traveled back to Winneconne, Wisconsin to partake in the NCAA’s Division III Midwest Regional on the Lake Breeze Golf Course. There are about forty teams in the Midwest Regional, and as predicted the top ranked teams went on to win. On the women’s side Washington University (MO) scored an easy win with a 41 to 87 victory over UW-Eau Claire (top two teams automatically qualify) for their third straight title. Individually, UW-River Falls’ Becca Jordahl came out with the title in 21:06 (5:37 per mile average). On the men’s side, UW-La Crosse claimed its fourth straight Regional victory as they edged UW-Stevens Point by six points. Individually, UW-Platteville’s Tyler Sigl easily claimed his third straight Regional title in a time of 24:01 (4:48 per mile average). The strength of the WIAC was obvious on both sides as our conference claimed five of the top six spots, seven of the top ten, and on the men’s side our conference claimed the top two spots, five of the top ten.

For Stout, it was a day of personal best as twelve of the team’s fourteen racers finished the season on a high note. On the women’s side of things, the team placed 16th, just two points from 15th. Despite the six team drop from last year, it was a real solid day for a team that replaced three of its top four from a year ago and four of the team’s top six from a year ago with four freshmen. Senior Bridgette Crozier and junior Rachel Richardson also cracked the 24-minute mark in 23:40 and 23:46 respectfully. Emily Stenzel led the team’s pack of freshmen in 24:01. Angie Raasch finished as the team’s fifth in 24:27 and then it was Karla Kultgen and Katie Schneiderman in 24:40 and 24:41. The Stout women finished with seven season best performances and six personal best. A big reason for these top times was the pick-up that the team put in on the 5th kilometer of the race to help get them through the tough second of the race. Abbey led a moved into 6th on Stout’s All-Time Top 6K Performance List. Joining her in the Top 20 was Rachel (10th), Emily (11th), Angie (16th), Karla (17th), and Katie (18th). Next season, will again bring about great change as the team will have to replace captains Abbey and Bridgette as well as Rachel Richardson who will all be greatly missed. The team will rely heavily on the freshmen that ran today as well as the other returners and next year’s group of freshmen.

On the men’s side the team placed 14th, an eight team improvement from a year ago, to edge out conference rival Eau Claire and River Falls. The team was paced by the All-Region performances of Nate Carey (32nd) and David Schonscheck (34th). More significant than seeing the two men place in the Top 35 was the fact that a year ago they were 127th and 80th respectfully. The performances were the fastest since Dave Huber’s National Qualifying run in 2003 in Colfax (25:11) and it moved the two into 9th and 10th on Stout’s All-Time Top Performance. It was also the first time since at least 2000 that the team had two All-Region finishers. Freshman Peter Johnston, freshmen Clint Loker, and junior Matt Kennedy closed out the team’s Top 5 with three more career best performances. Freshman Austin Thorson and junior Joey Merrill finished as the team’s two pushers. Austin finished with a career best, but Joey struggled through a tough race after a personal best performance two weeks ago. The team made some huge strides with highest placing since 2003, as the Top 5 runners averaged 1:18 faster than a year ago and the Top 7 were 59 seconds faster. As for next year, the graduation of David Schonscheck will hurt, and it will take continued improvement by the returners and another quality in coming class to help the team continue to improve.

The Studs of the Meet were seniors Abbey Ring and David Schonscheck. Abbey finished with another personal best as she moved into 6th All-Time at Stout. David cracked the 26-minute mark for the first time in his career as he earned All-Region Honors and moved into 10th All-Time at Stout.
