The team’s top seven runners had a total team time of 168:30 for an average of 24:04 per runner for a spread of 1:26. The Top 5 & 7 runners again chopped off more time as the Top 5 runners were 19 seconds a person faster and the Top 7 runners were 20 seconds faster per person.

MEN’S TEAM: The team’s top five runners had a total team time of 130:19 for an average of 26:04 per runner and a spread of 1:39. Both the Top 5 & 7 runners took another step in the right direction as the Top 5 were 38 seconds a person faster and the Top 7 runners were about 25 seconds faster per person. The team’s Top 5 average was 1:18 faster than a year ago and the Top 7 was 59 seconds faster per person than last season’s.

’07 PLACE IMPROVE
WOMEN’S TEAM: Rachel Richardson (23), Abbey Ring (24)
MEN’S TEAM: Matt Kennedy (22), David Schonscheck (46), Nate Carey (95)

SEASON BEST
WOMEN’S TEAM: Abbey Ring (:10), Karla Kultgen (:13), Bridgette Crozier (:14), Emily Stenzel (:20), Rachel Richardson (:25), Katie Schneiderman (:28), Angie Raasch (:43)

MEN’S TEAM: Matt Kennedy (:10), Nate Carey (:28), Clint Loker (:37), Austin Thorson (:46),
Peter Johnston & David Schonscheck (:57)

PERSONAL BEST
WOMEN’S TEAM: Abbey Ring (:10), Emily Stenzel (:20), Rachel Richardson (:25), Katie Schneiderman (:28), Angie Raasch (:43)

MEN’S TEAM: Joey Merrill (:04), Zach Becker (:07), Peter Johnston (:12), David Schonscheck (:15), Austin Thorson (:36), Matt Kennedy (:43), Clint Loker (:49), Sam Rabideau (:51), Nate Carey (1:30)

STUD OF THE MEET
Abbey Ring & David Schonscheck

MEET SUMMARY
On Saturday, the UW-Stout Cross Country team traveled back to Winneconne, Wisconsin to partake in the NCAA’s Division III Midwest Regional on the Lake Breeze Golf Course. There are about forty teams in the Midwest Regional, and as predicted the top ranked teams went on to win. On the women’s side Washington University (MO) scored an easy win with a 41 to 87 victory over UW-Eau Claire (top two teams automatically qualify) for their third straight title. Individually, UW-River Falls’ Becca Jordahl came out with the title in 21:06 (5:37 per mile average). On the men’s side, UW-La Crosse claimed its fourth straight Regional victory as they edged UW-Stevens Point by six points. Individually, UW-Platteville’s Tyler Sigl easily claimed his third straight Regional title in a time of 24:01 (4:48 per mile average). The strength of the WIAC was obvious on both sides as our conference claimed five of the top six spots, seven of the top ten, and on the men’s side our conference claimed the top two spots, five of the top ten.

For Stout, it was a day of personal best as twelve of the team’s fourteen racers finished the season on a high note. On the women’s side of things, the team placed 16th, just two points from 15th. Despite the six team drop from last year, it was a real solid day for a team that replaced three of its top four from a year ago and four of the team’s top six from a year ago with four freshmen. Senior Bridgette Crozier and junior Rachel Richardson also cracked the 24-minute mark in 23:40 and 23:46 respectfully. Emily Stenzel led the team’s pack of freshmen in 24:01. Angie Raasch finished as the team’s fifth in 24:27 and then it was Karla Kultgen and Katie Schneiderman in 24:40 and 24:41. The Stout women finished with seven season best performances and six personal best. A big reason for these top times was the pick-up that the team put in on the 5th kilometer of the race to help get them through the tough second of the race. Abbey led a moved into 6th on Stout’s All-Time Top 6K Performance List. Joining her in the Top 20 was Rachel (10th), Emily (11th), Angie (16th), Karla (17th), and Katie (18th). Next season, will again bring about great change as the team will have to replace captains Abbey and Bridgette as well as Rachel Richardson who will all be greatly missed. The team will rely heavily on the freshmen that ran today as well as the other returners and next year’s group of freshmen.

On the men’s side the team placed 14th, an eight team improvement from a year ago, to edge out conference rival Eau Claire and River Falls. The team was paced by the All-Region performances of Nate Carey (32nd) and David Schonscheck (34th). More significant than seeing the two men place in the Top 35 was the fact that a year ago they were 127th and 80th respectfully. The performances were the fastest since Dave Huber’s National Qualifying run in 2003 in Colfax (25:11) and it moved the two into 9th and 10th on Stout’s All-Time Top Performance. It was also the first time since at least 2000 that the team had two All-Region finishers. Freshman Peter Johnston, freshmen Clint Loker, and junior Matt Kennedy closed out the team’s Top 5 with three more career best performances. Freshman Austin Thorson and junior Joey Merrill finished as the team’s two pushers. Austin finished with a career best, but Joey struggled through a tough race after a personal best performance two weeks ago. The team made some huge strides with highest placing since 2003, as the Top 5 runners averaged 1:18 faster than a year ago and the Top 7 were 59 seconds faster. As for next year, the graduation of David Schonscheck will hurt, and it will take continued improvement by the returners and another quality in coming class to help the team continue to improve.

The Studs of the Meet were seniors Abbey Ring and David Schonscheck. Abbey finished with another personal best as she moved into 6th All-Time at Stout. David cracked the 26-minute mark for the first time in his career as he earned All-Region Honors and moved into 10th All-Time at Stout.

NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL

TRAVEL ITINERARY
FRI, NOVEMBER 9TH
Loads10:30am – Bus Departs
11:30 – Lunch Stop at Cadott
2:40pm – Arrive at Lake Breeze Golf Course for Course Inspection (Jog Course & Strides)
3:30pm – Mandatory Coaches Meeting in Clubhouse (Packet Pick-Up Begins)
4:50pm – Arrive at Best Western Midway at 3033 W College Ave in Appleton (920-731-4141)
6:15pm – Arrive at Fratello’s Waterfront at 4301 W Wisconsin Ave in Appleton (920-991-0000)
10:30pm – In Rooms For Night

SAT, NOVEMBER 10TH
6:45am – Women Wake & Head On 10 minute Shake Out Run
7:30am – Men Wake & Head On 10 minute Shake Out Run
9:10am – Bus Departs Lake Breeze Golf Course
9:15am – SEE BELOW TIME TABLE
3:00pm – Lunch Stop at at 417 Division St. in Stevens Point (Exit Hwy 51 S.)
7:00pm – Estimated Return To Menomonie, WI

MEET INFORMATION
DATE: Saturday, November 10, 2007

HOST: UW-Oshkosh

LOCATION: UW-Oshkosh host its cross country meets at the Lake Breeze Golf Course located in Winneconne, Wisconsin.

PARKING: Parking is free for team vehicles and adjacent to the course. Year-in and year-out the WIAC is the nation’s toughest Division III Conference, and 2007 was no different as both the men’s and women’s race featured four ranked teams. As expected, the UW-La Crosse men’s team easily walked away with its fourth straight title and twenty-ninth in school history. The real showdown came in the women’s race as UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville battled throughout the 6000 meters to determine this year’s champ. UW-Eau Claire squeaked out the win for just their second WIAC Championship and first since 1985 by just five points over UW-Platteville who was vying for its first.

In the women’s race, Oshkosh’s Ayla Mitchell won the title in 21:26 (5:46 average over almost 4 miles). Stout’s Abbey Ring ran a personal best to lead the team with a twenty-ninth place finish in 23:25. With two-kilometers to go Abbey was within reach of moving into the Top 20, what it takes to earn Honorable Mention Honors, and despite making the push for it, she came up just short of it finishing less than twenty seconds out. Shortly behind Abbey was a string of Stout finishers led by Bridgette Crozier. The trio of Bridgette, Rachel Richardson, and Emily Stenzel all ran season best and with Karla Kultgen running a big PR the team placed five runners under the 25-minute mark for the first time this season. Finishing just after Karla was Michelle Lewis and Katie Schneiderman to round out the team’s Top 7. Angie Raasch had another great day as she to nearly cracked the 25-minute mark as the team’s eight runner. Stephanie Libby, Bonnie Wold, Erica Schweikert, and Charity Cook all ran at least season best times to round out the team’s twelve lady roster. All in all, the team had about the best day it could as the lady’s finished in eighth place. The team was edged by Whitewater by a mere nine points, but going in I thought it would take a perfect race on our part to have a shot at beating anyone but Superior. While we had a real good day with twelve season best and eight personal best, I feel like a second run on the course will be very advantageous and set us up to finish in the top third of the field at the upcoming NCAA Regional meet which features about forty Midwest Division III teams.

On the men’s side, Plateville’s Tyler Sigl etched his name in the record books by just the fourth person to win at least three WIAC Titles finishing the 8000 meter race in 24:11 (4:53 average over 5 miles). Sophomore Nate Carey had the race of his life, to-date, to become just the second Stout man to earn Honorable Conference Honors in the last four years. Although Nate was 41st at the mile, he stayed the course and ran his race and by the 3-mile mark he had moved into twentieth place. He finished in sixteenth with a personal best by 1:30. David Schonscheck followed in 37th place with the team’s second personal best of the day, a trend that would continue. In fact, the team’s Top 8 finishers ran PR’s to help lead the team to a seventh place finish and just twelve points from sixth. Matt Kennedy, Clint Loker, and Peter Johnston rounded out the team’s scorers and Joey Merrill and Austin Thorson rounded out the team’s Top seven with Sam Rabideau finishing right behind them. Jon Golem and Josh Schmidt finished within tenths of one another and rounding out the teams Top 12 were Mark Parker and Zach Becker. It was a real strong run for the team and should set us up for an interesting race at the NCAA Regional in two weeks.

The Studs of the Meet were senior Bridgette Crozier and sophomore Nate Carey. Bridgette took another huge stride towards 100%, as she took off another minute and cracked the 24 mark for the first time this season. Nate had the race of the day as he ran a personal best of 1:30 to go sub 26 and earn Honorable Mention Honors for the first time in his career as he moved up 42 spots from last year’s race.

WIAC CHAMPIONSHIP INFO

TRAVEL ITINERARY
FRI, OCTOBER 26TH
10:15am – Bus Loads
10:30am – Bus Departs
Noon – Lunch Stop in Colby
3:30pm – Arrive at Lake Breeze Golf Course for Course Inspection
4:30pm – Depart Golf Course for Hotel
4:45pm – Arrive at Hawthorn Suites At 3105 S. The top five also had an impressive 60 second spread. The team’s top seven runners had a total team time of 145:42 for an average of 20:45 per runner which was 42 seconds faster than at Parkside with only part of the team running. Team scores were not kept as the focus of the meet was to continue working on racing skills. Stout ran primarily freshman and those who were not among the team’s top twelve, the team’s limit at the WIAC Championships.

Considering the team ran only a portion of its top seven runners, it was impressive to see the team finish with a faster total time through five and seven runners than it had at the Parkside Invitational. Emily Stenzel led the women in 19:47 which was another personal best and it re-established her in the team’s sub twenty minute honor roll. Karla Kultgen and Stephanie Libby came in next with their best races of the season as they cut off over a minute from the UW-Parkside meet at the beginning of the year. Bonnie Wold was the team’s fifth as she ran a 17 second personal best from last year. Katie Schneiderman and Kelsey Mullen were the team’s sixth and seventh runners and were both close to running personal best times. More personal best were to follow as Katie Wold and Anna Kuffel concluded their competitive seasons. Heather Wollesen was the team’s ninth finisher in 22:34.

On the men’s side the team only completed 5K of the race in order to remain fresh for next week. Sophomore Nate Carey led the way with a 16:44, a 13 second personal best in cross country. Peter Johnston came in close behind with a 16:55. Next for the team were freshmen Mark Parker and Mike Granke complete the 5K in 17:18 and 17:25 respectively. Next for Stout was Josh Schmidt, Sam Rabideau, Zach Becker, and Luke Lippert who all finished within seconds of one another around the 17:30 mark. Not far behind were Justin Verhulst, Jordan Scholzen, and Matt Steil who finished around the 18:15 mark. Josh Norton completed the distance in 18:30, and Will Lechleitner and Mike Burke came close together around the 19 minute mark.

The Studs of the Meet were freshmen Karla Kultgen and Mark Parker. Karla ran a personal best by 1:03 and Mark Parker returned to form as he completed the 5k distance in 17:18.

LAKE WISSOTA INFO

DATE
Friday, October 19, 2007

HOST
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

LOCATION
Lake Wissota State Park in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. While the weather was perfect for just the second time this season, the above average rain fall of the last month set the stage for another trudge fest as the average returner ran about 30 seconds slower than they had a year ago. Both fields were again very competitive and comprised of a number of nationally ranked teams. In the end, the women’s team placed twenty-third overall and the men’s team placed nineteenth.

The men’s race started the day off, and sophomore Nate Carey came through with his career best performance. The sophomore closed the gap on a number of conference competitors and surpassed others along the way. Freshman Peter Johnston finished with a near personal best as the team’s second runner in 27:43. Matt Kennedy, Jon Golem, and David Schonscheck compiled the team’s scoring runners and Clint Loker and Joey Merrill rounded out the team’s top seven.

The women’s team was again led by senior Abbey Ring who completed the course with a season best time as she placed 106th. Freshman Emily Stenzel and junior Rachel Richardson came in next for the team thirty seconds later in. Bridgette Crozier finished as the team’s fourth as she continues to make big strides after a leg injury that kept her from training for much of the season. Michelle Lewis finished as the team’s fifth runner and freshmen Katie Schneiderman and Stephanie Libby rounded out the team’s top seven. Emily Stenzel, Katie Schneiderman, Stephanie Libby, Angie Raasch, Karla Kultgen, Erica Schweikert, Katie Wold, and Jennah Brodersen all finished the race with personal best performances for the team.

The Studs of the Meet were freshman Angie Raasch and sophomore Nate Carey. Angie ran a 5K personal best – in the 6K. Angie rolled through the 5K in 21:57 which was 13 seconds faster than she had completed the Parkside 5K race. Angie went on to run a personal best 6K by 1:44. In the men’s race, Nate had his best race of the season and his career on Saturday. Nate ran 1:05 faster than he had a year ago and a ten second personal best.

DREWS/NEUBAUER INVITATIONAL INFO

DATE:
Saturday, October 13, 2007

HOST:
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

LOCATION:
The Maple Grove Country Club in West Salem, Wisconsin at W4142 County Road B.

PARKING: A parking fee will be assessed.

COURSE:
The course provides good footing over a slightly rolling terrain. Twenty-two years ago the program began honoring the named the Midwest’s largest cross country meet after the retired coach. This year’s meet brought over 370 schools and 4000 racers to the university’s Les Bolstad Golf Course in order to test the endurance against one another and the difficult course. This year the UW-Stout men’s cross country team joined the women’s team in partaking in the large event. Both teams competed in the highly competitive Division III races which were comprised of a number of nationally ranked teams from across the country. The women’s team placed 24th in the field of 42 and the men placed 17th in the field of 34.

The women’s team competed at full strength for the first time this season over the championship distance of 6000 meters. The field of 42 teams and 567 competitors was the largest that anyone on the team had ever been a part of. This was the first attempt for many of the team’s competitors to try their strength out at the 6000 meter distance. Abbey Ring led the team as she finished the race in 24:40 for 72nd place. Also scoring for the team was Emily Stenzel (25:15), Rachel Richardson (25:44), Michelle Lewis (25:49), and Katie Schneiderman (26:10). The team’s two pushes were Bridgette Crozier (26:12) and Stephanie Libby (26:37). Also completing the challenging course for the team was Karla Kultgen (26:44), Bonnie Wold (27:10), Charity Cook (27:45), Angie Raasch (27:57), Erica Schweikert (28:18), Heather Wollesen (28:40), Katie Wold (28:58), and Jennah Brodersen (31:08).

The men’s team had another strong performance as they finished in the middle of the 34 team field which was comprised of 367 competitors. The team was again led by David Schonscheck (27:56), and followed closely by Nate Carey (28:02), Peter Johnston (28:19), Matt Kennedy (28:32), and Clint Loker (28:46). The 50 second gap that separated the team’s scoring runners was its closest of the season. Jon Golem (29:04) and Joey Merrill (30:05) were the team’s two pushers. Zach Becker (30:18), Sam Rabideau (30:36), Luke Lippert (30:38), and Matt Steil (31:13) rounded the remainder of the team that completed the 8000 meter distance. An illness did keep freshman Mark Parker from completing the full 8000 meter race.

The Studs of the Meet were senior Abbey Ring and freshman Clint Loker. Abbey ran a very consistent race from start to finish as she improved her time by 14 seconds from a year ago. Clint had his best and most even split race of the season in just his second ever 8K.

The team’s now have two weeks to prepare for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Tori Neubauer & Jim Drew’s Invitational held in West Salem, WI. This will be the team’s final 6000/8000 meter meet before the WIAC Conference Championships held by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

ROY GRIAK INFORMATION

DATE: Satday, September 29, 2007

HOST: University of Minnesota

LOCATION: Les Bolstad Golf Course located at the University of Minnesota at 2275 W. This year’s meet was moved up a week due to the movement of the Roy Griak meet, which is the premiere meet of the Midwest. The weather conditions were less than ideal for stellar performances as the day’s warm and humid conditions, not to mention the extremely gusty winds, took a toll on a number of the runners as most of the meet’s returning performers were 35-45 seconds slower than a year ago. Due to the string of three straight meets and the upcoming Griak meet, the team used this meet as an experience builder for the Griak and the remainder of the season as many of the team’s runners completed the course shy of the 6000/8000 meter race distances. The goal for many of our runners was to focus on completing about two-thirds of the race distance at their end of the season goal pace and trying to make a move during the middle portion of the race. The runners completing the full race distance were working to improve upon a personal weakness.

The women’s team did have eight runners, complete the full 6000 meter distance. Rachel Richardson led the team with a time of 26:15 and was followed by Karla Kultgen who completed the course in 26:53. The remaining team scorers included Bonnie Wold (27:22), Kelsey Mullen (27:55), and Angie Raasch (28:19). Erica Schweikert (28:24) and Katie Wold (28:50) were the team’s two pushers. Charity Cook completed the course as the team’s eight runner in a time of 29:22.

The men’s team had ten runners complete the course as some of them were in a run off for a spot at the 12th spot at next week’s Griak Invitational (men’s team may only enter 12 competitors). Jon Golem lead the team (28:42) and was followed closely by Austin Thorson (29:02). The team’s remaining scorers included Sam Rabideau (29:30), Zach Becker (29:49), and Luke Lippert (30:25). The team’s two pushers were Matt Steil (30:40) and Josh Norton (31:05) who ran a minute plus personal best in his second ever 8K race. Zach Foy (31:12), Justin Verhulst (31:20), and Mike Burke (31:32) were the team’s remaining competitors completing the full 8000 meter distance.

The Studs of the Meet were sophomore Katie Wold and freshmen Josh Norton. Katie just missed improving her time from a year ago in what were some very tough conditions this year versus the ideal conditions of last season. Josh Norton knocked off 1:16 from his time a week ago as he was the only UW-Stout runner to run a new personal best time.

Next up for the team, is the annual Roy Graik Invitational host by the University of Minnesota this Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course located on the campus. The women’s 6000 meter race will begin at 9:00am and the men’s 8000 meter race will start at 10:30am.

BLUGOLD INVITATIONAL INFORMATION

DATE: Friday, September 21, 2007

HOST: UW-Eau Claire

LOCATION: Whitetail Golf Course just outside of Colfax, WI. The team had two runners ahead of last year’s first, seven ahead of last year’s second, and eleven ahead of last year’s fifth.

’07 IMPROVEMENTS:
WOMEN’S TEAM: Michelle Lewis (:21), Abbey Ring (:37), Katie Wold (1:22)

MEN’S TEAM: Joey Merrill (1:33), Nate Carey (1:35), Matt Kennedy (1:36), David Schonscheck (1:43), Justin Verhulst (2:10)

SEASON BEST:
WOMEN’S TEAM: Angie Raasch (:08), Michelle Lewis (:19), Katie Wold (:22), Abbey Ring (:33), Charity Cook (:35), Jennah Brodersen (:49), Katie Schneideman (1:01), Stephanie Libby (1:05), Karla Kultgen (1:19), Kelsey Mullen (1:23), Emily Stenzel (1:27), Heather Wollesen (2:00)

MEN’S TEAM: Joey Merrill (:09), Zach Becker (:10), Peter Johnston (:11), Sam Rabideau &
David Schonscheck (:12), Mark Parker (:14), Austin Thorson (:16), Luke & Clint Loker (:21), Jon Golem (:22), Zach Foy & Matt Steil (:23), Mike Burke (:29), Jordan Scholzen (:30), Josh Schmidt (:36), Will Lechleitner (:42), Justin Verhulst & Nate Carey (:43), Matt Kennedy (:45)

PERSONAL BEST:
WOMEN’S TEAM: Katie Wold (Tie), Angie Raasch (:08), Jennah Brodersen (:49), Katie Schneideman (1:01), Stephanie Libby (1:05), Karla Kultgen (1:19), Kelsey Mullen (1:23), Emily Stenzel (1:27)

STUD OF THE MEET: Emily Stenzel & Matt Kennedy

SUMMARY:
The UW-Stout Cross Country Teams officially began the 2007 season this at the Midwest Collegiate Challenge hosted by UW-Parkside. The met was filled with a variety of schools from Division I to Division III. While the team’s places were a bit behind last season, they saw a number of great performances that should give both teams something positive to look forward to as the season progresses.

The women’s team was lead by freshman Emily Stenzel and senior Abbey Ring. The two were within close proximity throughout the entire race and in the end only separated by four seconds. In the process, Stenzel moved into the school’s sub 20:00 5K list with her 19:58 in just her third ever 5K. Junior Michelle Lewis came in ahead of her pace from a year ago to finish as the team’s third runner. Following her was a crew of freshmen that all had tremendous performances in their first collegiate race – Katie Schneideman, Kelsey Mullen, Stephanie Libby, and Karla Kultgen. Also completing the 5K course were Charity Cook (SO), who is rebounding well from knee surgery, Angie Raasch (FR), Heather Wollesen (SO), Katie Wold (SO), who was the only returning runner to tie her personal best, and Jennah Brodersen (FR). Behind the scenes were Bridgette Crozier (SR), one of last year’s top runners, Erica Schweikert (JR), and Anna Kuffel (FR) who are working to recover from injury by completing a portion of the race.

The men’s team is where the improvement is vastly evident as the team completed the course by more than a minute per person ahead of last year’s team, and the team saw eleven runners finish with faster times than last year’s fifth! Leading the way was senior David Schonscheck. Following close behind was Nate Carey (SO), Peter Johnston (FR), and Matt Kennedy (JR). The team’s remaining varsity runners, who nearly all broke the 28-minute mark for 8000 meters (5 miles), were Clint Loker (FR), Jon Golem (SR), and Joey Merrill (SO). As with the women, the team’s story lies in the newly added depth due to this year’s incoming freshmen as seven they compiled seven of the next eight spots on the team – Mark Parker, Austin Thorson, Sam Rabideau, Zach Becke, Jordan Scholzen, Luke Lippert, and Matt Steil. The lone upper classman to break up the group was junior Justin Verhulst. Also, completing the course was Will Lechleitner (SR), Josh Schmidt (SO), Zach Foy (FR), Mike Burke (FR), and Josh Norton (FR). Behind the scenes was freshman Mike Granke who ran a portion of the race as he rebounds from a minor injury.

The Studs of the Meet were freshman Emily Stenzel and junior Matt Kennedy. Emily rolled to a new personal best as she cracked the 20-minute mark for the first time in her short career. Matt Kennedy knocked off 1:36 from his time a year ago as he helped to lead the team’s varsity group through the first couple of miles.

Next up for the team, is the annual Blugold Invitational host by UW-Eau Claire this Friday at the Whitetail Golf Course located just outside of Colfax. The women’s 6000 meter race will begin at 4:00pm and the men’s 8000 meter race will start at 5:00pm.

MIDWEST COLLEGIATE CHALLANGE INFO

FRI, SEPT 14TH
RUN & EAT DINNER BEFORE THE BUS LEAVES!
5:30pm – Bus Loads
5:45pm – Bus Departs (Movies, Pillow, School Work)
9:45pm – Arrive at Country Inn & Suites At 1250 S. Remember to run tangets and use those little rolling sections of the course to your advantage.

TEAMS: UW-Stout Alumni, UW-Stout

TEAM FINISH: The women’s tem defeated the alumni 20 to 37 while the men’s team defeated the alumni by a score of 15-48.

WI/MN: This year the Intra Squad scoring took on a different twist as the classic WI/MN Duel included the women as well. As has been the recent trend, Wisconsin remained victorious as they defeated Minnesota by a score of 11 to 19. Team scores were based upon the finishing place of the top five state residents from either race (alumni removed). Therefore Wisconsin scored two first place performances (Abbey & David), two second place performances (Rachel & Peter), and a fifth place performance (Clint). Minnesota scored two third place performances (Michelle & Joey), two fourth place performances (Emily & Nate), and a fifth place performance (Bonnie).

STUD OF THE MEET: Bonnie Wold & Joey Merrill - Both runners had tremendous second half races.

MEET SUMMARY: As usual, the Annual Jamie Block Alumni meet drew a fantastic crowd filled of new and old faces filled with great enthusiasm for the sport of cross country. According to everyone I talked with, we had the largest ever turnout for the meet and post meet picnic. The only disappointment seem to come from those looking to run the usual course, which had to be modified due to weather damage done earlier in the week. There were a number of strong races from top to bottom and experienced to novice. It was an exciting meet as a coach as we had so many solid performances as well as a number of people who really rolled the second half of the race as was planned (out comfortable for the first half and then see what you can do).

As usual, the women’s team flexed its might against the alumni as they went on to a 20-37 victory. Abbey ring paced the team with a second place finish. The remaining scorers included Rachel Richardson, Michelle Lewis, Emily Stenzel, and Bonnie Wold and Katie Schneiderman and Angie Raasch rounded out the team’s top seven.

On the men’s side there was nothing but shock coming out of many of the spectators and alumni as Stout won the meet in decisive fashion – 15 to 48. The team scored the first five competitors and had it not been for alum Dave Huber’s (’04) final push the team would have gone 1-7. The team was lead by senior captain David Shonscheck who won his first ever Jamie Block Alumni/Intra Squad Meet. After David it was a freshman Peter Johnston, sophomores Joey Merrill and Nate Carey, and freshman Clint Loker. Closing out the team’s top seven, right on the heels of Dave Huber, were senior captain Jon Golem and junior Matt Kennedy.

However, as we all know the day is not about the races but the celebration of family, camaraderie, and running. That is why the meet honors Jamie Block and his family. If there was one thing that I learned as a new coach to the program, it was that Jamie was a tremendous person who had a significant impact on the lives of all those he came in contact with. His life is an example of what we should strive for.
